the story of the butterfly
Each year, tens of thousands of women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. More women will die than will live from the disease. Our founder, nine-year survivor Patricia Franchi Flaherty took a stand when she was diagnosed a second time in 2006. She learned that in the thirty years since her mother died of the same disease, little more was known about ovarian cancer. She decided that whether or not this disease took her life, she was going to create a stir.
Patty had an idea brewing: she wanted to start an organization whose sole purpose would be to raise funds and awareness for ovarian cancer and the women who were fighting the battle. She wanted to leave a legacy and not simply go away with a whisper, as so many patients do. She remembered the quote that her mother told her and decided that the symbol for her organization would be a butterfly. That stir turned into Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian Cancer, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to ovarian cancer research, education, patient outreach, treatment options, awareness and support.
Patty fought courageously for three years after creating Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian Cancer. Her efforts have left their mark—Ovations has directed over $1.4 million to ovarian cancer research, awareness and patient outreach, and there are no plans to stop there. Patty left a legacy based on her tireless efforts to change the face of ovarian cancer and improve the odds for women everywhere. But the need for more research is still critical. We need your help. Show that you are taking a stand with us by purchasing our butterfly pin or other branded items and wearing them proudly.
Since Patty's passing, her friends have suggested that the butterfly be the symbol of rememberance of the grace and beauty Patty possessed, even while waging war on a devastating disease. In honor of Patty's relentless efforts, these .5" enameled butterfly pins are available for you to show your support and carry on the essence of the butterfly. These distinctive pieces, along with the other exclusive items in our Ovations store, symbolize the stir that was created by one relentless woman demanding to know more about ovarian cancer and vowing to spread awareness and raise funds leading to a cure.
