Here’s another reason to be cautious if you’re considering having your ovaries removed to prevent ovarian cancer: A recent study has found that removing both ovaries may nearly double your risk of lung cancer.
This news comes on the heels of another report that removing the ovaries increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.
The new study, published in the International Journal of Cancer, looked at nearly 1000 women to see if hormonal factors played a part in lung cancer risk. Normal lung tissue and lung cancers have estrogen receptors, which some researchers think might mean that hormones could play a role in the disease. The only hormonal factor that seemed to increase risk was unnatural menopause, which is most commonly caused by having both ovaries surgically removed.
